SUMMARY:RTG Colloquium:Bruno Schuler
DESCRIPTION:Probing atomic defects in 2D semiconductors with light-coupled STM\n\n\n\nEmpa\, Switzerland \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTwo-dimensional (2D) semiconductors provide an exciting platform to engineer atomic quantum systems in a robust\, yet tunable solid-state system. This talk explores the intriguing physics of single point defects in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers\, investigated through atomically resolved scanning probe microscopy. \n\n\n\nWe demonstrate electrically induced exciton emission from both pristine MoS₂ and individual charged defects using scanning tunnelling microscope luminescence (STML) on ultrathin hBN decoupling layers [1]. Furthermore\, I will present our recent advances in time-resolved THz-STM using QEV maps to achieve state-selective ultrafast charge injection [2]. This approach enables the investigation of charge [3] and exciton dynamics [4] with atomic spatial\, millielectronvolt energy\, and picosecond temporal resolution. \n\n\n\nBy combining the structural and electronic properties accessible by conventional scanning probe microscopy with the optical fingerprint from STML and the excited-state dynamics revealed through pump-probe THz-STM\, we gain a comprehensive microscopic understanding of localized quantum states in low-dimensional materials. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n[1] L. SUMMARY:Special lecture series: Ultrafast linear and nonlinear X-ray spectroscopy
DESCRIPTION:September 28 – September 30 \n\n\n\n10:00 – 11:00 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMichael W. Zuerch\n\n\n\nUniversity of California\, Berkeley \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nPart I: Introduction and fundamentals \n\n\n\nIn this first lecture\, I will explore the advantages of elemental and symmetry-selective probes for studying chemically relevant interfaces and symmetry properties in materials\, contrasting these approaches with conventional methods commonly used in experimental condensed matter physics. Additionally\, I will provide an overview of the fundamentals of X-ray spectroscopy and free-electron lasers that enabled the recent demonstrations of nonlinear spectroscopy in the X-ray regime. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nPart II: Linking nonlinear optics between visible and X-ray regime \n\n\n\nIn this lecture\, we will focus on the fundamentals of nonlinear optics and explore how to bridge our understanding across photon energy scales\, from the visible to the X-ray regime. We will specifically examine the foundational differences between the visible/infrared regimes\, which provide surface sensitivity\, the XUV/soft X-ray regime\, which enables elemental specificity at interfaces\, and the hard X-ray regime\, which is sensitive to bulk symmetry. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nPart III: Applications in materials and liquid interfaces \n\n\n\nIn this lecture\, I will present recent examples demonstrating how the combination of linear and nonlinear X-ray spectroscopy can reveal properties of matter and interfaces that are otherwise inaccessible. These examples include complex quantum phases of matter and the surface of water. \n\n\n\nVenue: RUN Auditorium

SUMMARY:RTG Colloquium:Martin Weik
DESCRIPTION:Integrated time-resolved structural biology approaches to visualize photoreceptor proteins at work\n\n\n\nInstitut de Biologie Structurale\, Grenoble \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nPhotoreceptor proteins utilise the absorption of light to elicit a biological response in a variety of processes\, including vision\, circadian rhythms and plant development. In order to visualise the structural dynamics of photoreceptor proteins in action\, a particularly powerful approach is to integrate results from various time-resolved structural biology approaches: time-resolved serial femtosecond crystallography\, time-resolved X-ray solution scattering and time-resolved single particle cryo-EM. The merits of a synergistic implementation of these approaches will be exemplified by a recent study that investigates a vitamin B12-dependent photo-receptor. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nVenue: RUN Auditorium
